The treatment process with an orthodontist requires responsibility from the patient, so you need to follow a number of rules - both in nutrition and in cleaning. The doctor will definitely tell you about this at the appointment. By themselves, neither aligners, nor even obsolete metal braces harm tooth enamel and do not cause caries. Only improper care, including insufficient hygiene, is harmful.

After eating, small particles of food always remain on the teeth. If it contained carbohydrates, an acidic environment immediately appears in the mouth, harmful to the enamel. But saliva, which has a slightly alkaline reaction, gradually washes away plaque and neutralizes the acid.

For orthodontic patients, a special dental floss (superfloss) is produced. It differs from ordinary thread in that it has different thicknesses. The thicker part of the floss is used for gaps between teeth that may appear while wearing braces. The thinner part is for dense teeth. Superfloss also has a compacted flexible tip (like a lace), thanks to which you can quickly thread the thread through the arch of the braces system.

The thread must be used at least once a day, for example, in the evening before bed. You can do this both before brushing, so that you can then remove as much plaque as possible with a toothbrush, and after brushing. In the second case, do not forget to rinse your mouth after flossing.

If your gums bleed while flossing, this may be a sign of inflammation. In this case, you need to contact a gum treatment specialist - a periodontist.

Is it necessary to undergo professional hygiene if I brush my teeth well at home?

Before starting orthodontic treatment, all Dial-Dent patients undergo training in cleaning teeth with braces at home and receive a gift set of teeth care products with braces. Even under these conditions, professional teeth cleaning is mandatory, since braces on the teeth create many places that are difficult to reach for cleaning on your own.
