Therapeutic effect
The high effectiveness of the drug in the treatment of thrush is due to the ability of the substance to neutralize the activity of fungal microorganisms on the vaginal mucosa.
Borax in glycerin provokes disruption of the vital activity of yeast-like fungi. However, it does not apply to fungicides or fungistatic agents, since the active substance does not produce a direct toxic effect on fungal infections.
A solution of borax in glycerin is an antiseptic drug that does not cope with the cause of the pathology. Therefore, its use is of an auxiliary nature.
Diagnosis and symptoms of stomatitis
The appearance of purulent white ulcers on the mucous membrane (stomatitis) worries children almost from birth. The causes of this pathology are not fully understood: perhaps it is a reaction of the immune system to an as yet unrecognized virus.
In children, the disease is severe:
- the mucous membrane swells and turns red;
- ulceration forms at the site of the white plaque;
- hyperthermia and general malaise are noted;
- lymph nodes enlarge;
- Sometimes ulceration appears on the surface of the lips and skin.
Stomatitis differs in the nature of the disease: acute and recurrent form. The causes of stomatitis can be caused by infection of the body or injuries to the mucous membrane, for example, a hard nipple on a bottle of formula. Stomatitis is most common in infants: the habit of trying everything on the tooth leads to inevitable injuries. In adults, mucosal ulceration can be caused by poor oral hygiene or aggressive antibiotic therapy.
A factor creating conditions for the development of the disease may be:
- acute infection;
- dermatitis;
- blood diseases;
- vitamin deficiency;
- mucosal injury;
- use of certain medications.
In most cases, stomatitis of an infectious nature occurs, caused by oral bacteria - they constantly live on the mucous membrane. A decrease in the tone of immune bodies provokes active growth and reproduction of bacteria. In children, aphthous stomatitis, which occurs against the background of immune deficiency, is more common.
Treatment of childhood candidiasis
If a fungal infection is detected in a baby, the doctor may prescribe borax. Most often, young children suffer from stomatitis. It can be localized not only in the mouth, but also on the baby’s genitals.
To treat the infection and restore proper feeding, local treatment of the damaged areas should be carried out. Borax is recommended to be used 3-4 times a day. To do this, the oral cavity should be carefully and carefully processed so that more fluid gets to the affected areas.
The first results can be achieved on the 3rd day. The child begins to feel better and becomes less whiny. His swallowing functions are restored, pain is reduced, and the white films disappear.
After eliminating the visual symptoms of the pathology, you need to treat the oral cavity for several more days. This will help avoid recurrence of the infection.
When treating young children, care must be taken to avoid fluid entering the body. This is due to the toxic properties of the substance. That is why borax is not always prescribed for thrush in infants.
Allergic reactions in the form of rashes appear quite rarely. Most often this is observed with individual sensitivity to the components. If complications occur, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Benefits and harms
Borax is a substance of low toxicity, but its big disadvantage is that it is very slowly eliminated from the body.
Eating foods that contain even small amounts of this preservative is dangerous to health. The harmful substance accumulates in the body and slowly poisons it. First of all, the digestive system suffers: metabolism slows down, a person feels pain in the abdomen, and diarrhea may begin. Continued consumption of foods containing this additive is risky. The worst outcome is toxic poisoning .
The preservative E285 is banned in many countries, including Russia. However, it continues to be used in food production in the European Union, China, and some Asian countries.
We all know that products with food additives and preservatives are harmful to health. But, sometimes we forget, we make purchases again, without reading the label, not paying attention to the ingredients, and take shelf-stable products from the store shelves. But such forgetfulness can play a cruel joke on the health of the consumer. Be vigilant, take care of yourself, eat only foods with ingredients that are safe for health!
Chemical composition
Borax contains the following components:
- 16% sodium;
- 37% boron;
- 47% water.
The combination of components is the sodium salt of boric acid. As a result of chemical reactions, it is possible to obtain a pure substance. Its solution with glycerin is actively used to treat infectious pathologies.
To facilitate the penetration of borax in glycerin into the structure of the skin, the main component is combined with glycerin. In pharmacies you can find 20% borax with glycerin.
What is
Borax, as sodium tetraborate is also called, is a white, fine-crystalline powder, soluble in water or glycerin.
It is produced on the basis of boric acid, therefore it is a rather toxic substance. The composition of the drug includes 20 g of the active substance sodium tetraborate and 80 g of the auxiliary substance - glycerol.
The substance is used exclusively for local and external use. For the treatment of stomatitis, borax solution is used as a medicine for spot application, mouth rinse or application to damaged areas.
Indications for use
Indications for the use of the drug include the following conditions:
- Inflammations of a fungal nature, pathologies of the vagina, vulva, groin, perineum, thrush.
- Stomatitis and inflammatory lesions of the oral cavity of various origins. Borax in glycerin can be used to treat fungal, atrophic, and bacterial pathologies.
- Inflammation of the nose, throat, ears.
- Inflammation of the epithelium, fungal infections on the skin and folds. Borax can also be used for prevention.
- Bedsores in bedridden patients. Borax in glycerin is used for medicinal purposes and for prevention.
For women
Borax in glycerin is often used to treat thrush in women. The product helps to cope with vaginal dysbiosis. The procedure is highly effective. You can do it yourself.
Before applying the substance, it is recommended to douche the vagina and perineum with ordinary warm water. You can also use herbs that cope with inflammation.
After this, you need to insert a gauze swab soaked in borax into the vagina. It is recommended to leave it for 30 minutes, then remove it. After this, the genitals should not be treated. Thanks to this, the borax will continue to work.
In complex cases of vaginal dysbiosis, the procedure should be performed 2 times a day. For tolerable itching and burning, it is enough to insert a tampon once a day. If the pathology is chronic, the number of manipulations is increased to 2. Therapy should last 7-10 days.
Sometimes fungal mycelium enters the mucous membranes of the vagina and hides there. If the fungus infects the crypts, the liquid does not always have a beneficial effect. To ensure the effectiveness of borax, it is worth monitoring the symptoms of the disease. If relapses occur, the course of therapy should be repeated.
For men
Men also periodically experience candidiasis. However, their symptoms of the disease appear much less frequently. If the pathology recurs, local treatment of the external genitalia is performed. Men are recommended to apply directly to the affected area.
The procedure is quite easy to perform. To do this, you need to make an applicator from several layers of gauze. Then soak it in the liquid and wrap it around the penis. To achieve good results, you need to ensure a tight fit of the bandage. The active component of borax disrupts the attachment of fungal microorganisms to the mucous membranes.
Thanks to this, it is possible to remove the dense white coating that forms on the head of the penis. If there is no discomfort during the procedure, it is recommended to hold the applicator for 30-45 minutes.
Additional measures
To avoid re-infection, you must follow the following rules:
- monitor your child’s oral hygiene;
- stop biting your nails and putting things in your mouth;
- treat dishes with boiling water: nipples, bottles, plates;
- replace a toothbrush with hard bristles with a soft one;
- treat nipples before breastfeeding;
- Do not feed your baby too hot food.
To reduce pain when eating, special pain-relieving gels are used. In case of extensive damage to the mucous membrane, the spoon can be replaced with a straw, while giving the child only liquid food.
Avoid sour and spicy-tasting foods during treatment so as not to further irritate the mucous membrane. Make sure that the diet is enriched with the necessary mineral and vitamin composition.
Attention must also be paid to the hygiene of the child’s room. It is necessary to regularly wipe surfaces from dust with a damp cloth, replace vacuuming with a damp cloth, monitor the freshness of the air, and if it is excessively dry, humidify the air in the room.
Along with treatment, it is necessary to strengthen the child’s immune forces and ensure rapid restoration of the affected tissue. For this use:
- Aekol - for applications;
- Vinylin - for quick healing;
- Solcoseryl - to restore damaged tissues;
- Sea buckthorn oil - to relieve pain and restore the epithelium.
To speed up tissue healing, rinse with herbs (between the main treatment). To do this, use chamomile, which has antiseptic wound-healing properties. You can use any herbs with an astringent and antiseptic effect (oak, sage, marigold). They also make applications of aloe juice with honey, and rinse the mouth with propolis tincture.
Baking soda with salt is a common remedy for ulcerative lesions of the mucous membrane. For small children, prepare in the following proportion: a coffee spoon of soda and salt per cup of cooled boiled water. If the baby does not know how to rinse his mouth, wipe the mucous membrane with the solution - moisten the gauze and treat the mouth.

pharmachologic effect
The active substance in borax, sodium tetraborate, helps achieve 2 effects. The drug has antiseptic and bacteriostatic properties. Borax in glycerin is part of a combination of drugs that are used to eliminate inflammation in the upper respiratory tract. This effect is due to its antimicrobial properties.
The medicinal substance brings tangible results only when applied to the affected mucous membranes and skin. Borax in glycerin can enter the digestive system and then leave the body through the intestines and kidneys. This takes 1 week.
Overdose
An overdose of a solution of sodium tetraborate in glycerin is very dangerous, since the lethal dose is only 10-15 grams for an adult. Therefore, despite the fact that the drug is inexpensive, you should buy it only for its intended use.
If you overdose with a smaller amount of solution, the following symptoms may occur:
- Disturbances in the functioning of the digestive organs;
- Weakness, dizziness, even loss of consciousness;
- Intoxication of the liver and kidneys;
- Limb spasms;
- Cardiopalmus.
If there are one or more signs of a drug overdose, you should urgently seek medical help. You can do gastric lavage yourself. To do this, use warm boiled water or a weak saline solution. After drinking 6-7 glasses of water, you need to induce vomiting by pressing your fingers on the root of the tongue. Repeat the procedure several times.
Advantages and disadvantages of the product
The advantages of the drug include the following:
- Low price. Borax in glycerin is much cheaper than other antiseptic drugs and combination drugs.
- Minimal toxic effect. Borax in glycerin is well tolerated and does not provoke dangerous adverse reactions.
- Possibility of use in different categories of patients. The medicine can be used to treat children and pregnant women.
- High efficiency. Glycerin produces a softening effect and helps relieve inflammation. With its help, it is possible to eliminate the sensation of itching and burning. Boric acid restores the acidic environment of the vagina and helps activate the development of beneficial lactic acid bacteria.
However, borax in glycerin also has certain disadvantages:
- Difficulties with purchasing. The drug is quite old, so many pharmacies have stopped selling it.
- Risk of burning and discomfort. When applied topically, borax can cause unpleasant symptoms associated with the action of acid on the affected mucous membranes.
- Toxic effect. This effect is observed with prolonged or frequent use of the drug.
General information
Sodium tetraborate is also known as borax. It is a powerful antiseptic used for the therapeutic treatment of many diseases. The product is better known in dental practice as the best among all known in the treatment of stomatitis.
A weak solution of sodium salts and glycerin has a beneficial effect on damaged areas of the mucosa, destroys pathogenic microflora, soothes, and quickly improves the clinical picture.
It is used as a treatment as follows:
- hygienic rinses;
- local treatment of ulcerative structures using a tampon;
- applications with solution.
The drug is known in gynecological practice as an effective drug for the treatment of diseases caused by the fungus Candida (thrush), in otolaryngology - for the treatment of otitis media, inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.
Borax is the main component of many drugs for the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract; it has a depressing effect on fungal flora, destroying all ulcerative elements of the oral cavity.
The product prevents the development of new local inflammatory areas. The medicine is very quickly absorbed by the body, enters the esophagus, and is excreted in feces or urine (intestines/kidneys, respectively).
Price
Sodium tetraborate solution can be purchased at any pharmacy in the Russian Federation: pharmacies in St. Petersburg offer the drug at a price of 8.25 to 15 rubles per bottle with a capacity of 30 grams.
In Moscow, the same drug can be bought at a price of 14 to 20 rubles . Before visiting the nearest pharmacy, it is better to call several to find out the price range - when buying one bottle this does not make a significant difference, but for a full course lasting 3 weeks, the savings will be significant.
The use of borax in gynecology, instructions for thrush
Gynecology has always been the main branch of medicine, widely and with good results using borax in glycerin for the treatment of various inflammatory diseases of the vagina and vulva - colpitis and vulvovaginitis. Several decades ago, borax and borax in glycerin were the main remedies for the treatment of such a common female disease as vulvovaginal candidiasis, or thrush. Then the remedy was completely undeservedly forgotten, replaced by new antifungal drugs and antiseptics.
Uncontrolled and often excessive use of various antiseptics, antifungals, antibiotics in gynecology, intrusive advertising of some products, and their over-the-counter dispensing from pharmacies have provoked multiple drug resistance to modern medications. Many patients are no longer helped by “one magic capsule” of fluconazole or the usual suppositories for thrush. Therefore, many gynecologists remembered such an old and proven remedy as borax in glycerin for thrush, to which new types of microorganisms have not yet developed resistance.
Instructions for use
Most often, the product is used in the form of vaginal medicinal tampons. It is important not to confuse medicinal tampons with hygienic tampons used during menstruation. Therapeutic tampons are made of cotton wool and gauze; they are loose, since their task is not to absorb liquid, but to release it.
A cotton-gauze swab is moistened with a borax solution and inserted deep into the vagina. The tampon remains there for a period of time from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the patient’s well-being, since the drug can cause burning and itching. The course of treatment is about 7–10 days. Often such tampons are combined with oral products, suppositories and vaginal creams.
Less commonly, patients are prescribed vaginal baths or borax treatments. They are carried out by a doctor or midwife, since this treatment requires exposing the vaginal mucosa in the gynecological speculum. Such measures are often used in pregnant women with chronic thrush, with frequent relapses and ineffectiveness of approved drugs.
Another point of application for borax in glycerin is cracked nipples and confirmed candidiasis of the nipple in nursing mothers. In this case, it is necessary to lubricate the affected nipple with the solution after each feeding until the crack is completely healed.

Pharmacological properties and effects
The use of sodium tetraborate for ulcerative stomatitis in children or adults is explained by the rapid elimination of external signs of the disease, as well as internal symptoms of the disease. Antibacterial properties make it possible to influence the appearance of candida fungus and prevent the reappearance of ulcers.
The product can be used along with other medications or in combination with herbal medicine, for example, rinsing the mouth with decoctions of medicinal herbs. When combining sodium tetraborate and other drugs, a significant increase in the effectiveness of the latter was noted.
Due to its high toxicity, it is important to take the drug only as prescribed by a doctor. This especially applies to pregnant or lactating women, children of early or school age, and adult patients with a burdened clinical history.
The instructions suggest only local use of the solution to treat affected areas of the oral mucosa.
