Causes of hereditary chorea:

Huntington's disease
is a hereditary disease, transmitted in an autosomal dominant manner, associated with progressive degeneration of neurons in the subcortical nuclei and cortex. The disease manifests itself as a combination of choreic hyperkinesis, personality disorders and dementia (acquired dementia). Huntington's chorea most often begins at 35-42 years of age, but can manifest at any age. The disease begins gradually, more often in the facial area in the form of involuntary frowning, opening the mouth, sticking out the tongue, and licking the lips. Then comes hyperkinesis of the hands (“fingers playing the piano”). There is a generalization of the process with a violation of statics and gait.

Memory deteriorates, criticism of one’s condition decreases, self-care becomes difficult, and dementia develops and progresses.

Sometimes the disease begins with depression, hallucinations, delusions, and behavioral disorders. After 1.5-2 years, impaired attention, motor hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior appear. In the terminal stage, patients most often die from aspiration pneumonia when food or liquid enters the respiratory tract.


Neuroacanthocytosis

may have an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance, but sporadic cases of the disease also occur. The disease manifests itself as chorea and changes in the shape of red blood cells. The disease usually begins after 30-40 years with oral hyperkinesis (tongue protrusion, lip movements, chewing, involuntary grimaces). Stereotyped repetitions of identical sounds and uncontrolled automatic repetition of words heard in someone else's speech are often observed. Self-harm is possible in the form of involuntary biting of the tongue, lips and inner surfaces of the cheeks. Choreic hyperkinesis of the limbs and trunk is often noted. The disease differs from Huntington's chorea in the loss of muscle mass in the limbs. Later, epileptic seizures and dementia often occur.

Benign (non-progressive) hereditary chorea

without dementia is a rare hereditary disease with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance, which usually begins in infancy or early childhood.

The resulting generalized excessive movement disorders can be barely noticeable or extremely pronounced, lead to incapacity, and stop during sleep.

  • Autoimmune diseases (systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, chorea of ​​pregnancy, reaction to immunization, Sydenham's chorea, multiple sclerosis).
  • Metabolic disorders (hyperthyroidism, Leigh disease, hypocalcemia, Fabry disease, hypo- and hyperglycemia, Wilson-Konovalov disease, Niemann-Pick disease, Hallerwarden-Spatz disease, homocystinuria, phenylketonuria, Hartnup disease, glutaric aciduria, gangliosidosis, methochromatic leukodystrophy, Merzbacher disease -Peliceus, mucopolysaccharidoses, Sturge-Weber disease, etc.).

Most often, Sydenham's chorea resolves on its own within 6 months, but sometimes relapses occur.

The cause of chorea may be

Chorea of ​​pregnancy
