Is mouthwash good or bad for you?

Progress, as they say, does not stand still and every day brings more and more new goods into our world. This applies to all spheres of life - science, technology, culture and, of course, everyday life. The household industry almost every day develops and produces more and more new items that make life easier and improve human existence.

For example, just thirty years ago, teeth were brushed with toothpowder, a soft brush and cool water. Today, there are dental flosses, brushes of varying degrees of hardness, toothpastes (even black ones!), and mouth rinses that, as advertising says, kill up to ninety percent of bacteria. But is this last-mentioned remedy really that useful?

The history of the creation of the rinse aid

First, it’s worth figuring out how this mouthwash came about? It has long been known that teeth need to be brushed not only after getting up in the morning, immediately before breakfast, but also after it. And it has also been known for a long time that a person is a creature who tends to be late. Developers and researchers took all this into account and created a tool that allows you to save time and not harm your health. But is this really so? Not really.

Mouthwashes were first mentioned in 2700 BC. in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

Later, they began to rinse the mouth in Greece and Rome. Hippocrates advised using a mixture of natural fruit vinegar, alum and salt for this purpose.

Before the arrival of Europeans on American soil, the settlements of the ancient Aztecs made a balm from various plants and herbs (tincture of Coptis trifolia herb).

In the 17th century, microscopist from the Netherlands Antonie van Leeuwenhoek found living organisms in dental plaque. He began experimenting and discovered that harmful bacteria could easily be neutralized with ordinary vinegar or brandy.

At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the scientific development of two Americans, Joseph Lawrence and Jordan Lambert, was a mouthwash based on menthol, thymol, methyl salicylate and cineole in a solution of 20% ethanol. They decided to name the mouthwash after Dr. Joseph Lister, who first performed surgery using antiseptics and proved their effectiveness. This is how the mouthwash, Listerine, was born. However, it was intended only for dentists. It became possible to purchase Listerine in pharmacies in 1914.

In the late 1960s, Danish professor Harald Loe showed that Chlorhexidine could prevent plaque. Manufacturers stated that the rinses would reduce the appearance of gingivitis and bad breath, which significantly increased sales of the rinses.

Tips for choosing a rinse aid

If the product is chosen to prevent the appearance of carious formations, then it is better to choose a rinse aid, the main active ingredient of which is amino fluoride or sodium fluoride. In this case, the concentration of fluorine in the solution should not be less than 250 ppm, otherwise the substance will not have the desired effect.

The mouthwash should be used several times a day for one minute at a time. If you purchase a rinse with fluoride, then an excellent addition to it will be toothpaste with calcium, which should be used before using the product: the anti-carious effect in this case will be maximum.

If the composition contains antiseptics (for example, chlorhexidine or others), then you can use this product for a couple of weeks, but no more. By ignoring this recommendation, you can provoke the development of dysbacteriosis and develop an unpleasant odor that will appear after you stop using the product. Rinses with antiseptics in their composition are justified in the treatment of gum diseases (for example, periodontitis or gingivitis), but only after removal of deposits by a doctor.

Mouthwashes with herbal ingredients can be used on an ongoing basis as a prophylactic to prevent gum inflammation.

Some of these products contain alcohol: children under 6 years of age and people driving a car should use this product with caution.

So what should I do?

The main rule is not to use oral hygiene products on the advice of friends or by buying into bright and promising advertising. Before buying a mouthwash, consult your dentist. Now on the market you can find many safer and healthier solutions that will really help in home care, and will not draw a guiding arrow towards the dental clinic.

And yes, a more profitable and useful alternative to mouthwash is an irrigator. It will last a long time, get rid of stuck food particles and wash away plaque without disturbing the beneficial microflora.

Mouthwashes for caries prevention: which one to choose?

  1. Elmex (Elmex). According to most dentists, this product is the best. It contains amino fluoride, the most effective fluoride compound, which forms a thin film on the teeth, thanks to which fluoride continues to penetrate into the tissues even after using the product. Elmex does not contain alcohol or any antibiotics that provoke the development of dysbacteriosis. The mouthwash can be used continuously from the age of 6 years. The average price of a 400-ml bottle is about 230 rubles.

  2. PRESIDENT (President) "Classic Plus". A quality Italian product with sodium fluoride and herbal ingredients. In addition to strengthening the enamel, the mouthwash freshens breath. It is slightly inferior to Elmex in terms of effectiveness, and it costs more: 250 ml. solution will cost 210 rubles.

Rinse aid “kills” the effect of active toothpaste.

The one that contains active substances designed to treat and protect your teeth and gums. You paid money for them, and then neutralized all the active components with your own hands. How? Yes, just immediately after brushing your teeth, they rinsed them with a harmful product. So to speak, they burned everything and everyone.

Remember that the people most susceptible to tooth decay are those whose mouths have minimal (or no) beneficial bacteria in their mouths and are as dry as the desert. And no, it’s not enough to just drink cool, clean water. We are talking about saliva, which contains all the necessary minerals to strengthen the enamel. It is saliva that is the natural enemy of caries. What if she doesn't exist? It's like leaving a military base without guards overnight, right?

Sore gums: will mouthwash help?

To combat gum inflammation, rinses are often used as a simple and affordable remedy. However, it is necessary to understand that the solution can only temporarily remove symptoms, but not eradicate the cause of inflammation, therefore, after stopping its use, inflammation will return.

The main cause of bleeding gums is soft microbial plaque and subgingival deposits, which need to be eliminated by visiting a dentist. After the procedure, he will prescribe medications as part of anti-inflammatory therapy. Using a mouthwash without treatment will mask the symptoms of inflammation, but the inflammatory process will not stop: as a result, sooner or later the teeth will begin to become loose.

Rinses used for periodontitis and gingivitis

  1. LACALUT (Lakalut) "Aktiv" (Asset). German rinse with chlorhexidine, fluoride and aluminum lactate - a substance that reduces bleeding gums. The product is very effective, but it can be used for a maximum of 3 weeks in a row. 300 ml. the solution will cost approximately 220 rubles.

  2. Paradontax (Paradontaks). An English product with chlorhexidine and a fluoride compound that strengthens teeth. Use is allowed for 3 weeks in a row: longer use is fraught with the development of dysbacteriosis. 300 ml. solutions cost about 200 rubles.

  3. PRESIDENT (President) “Profi”. Italian remedy with plant extracts and chlorhexidine. It has a classic composition for the treatment of gum diseases. Use for more than 3 weeks without interruption is not recommended.

  4. LISTERINE (Listerine). Italian solution with methyl salicylate (anti-inflammatory). Since the fluoride concentration is low (100 ppm), the product will protect against caries worse than previous samples.

  5. Asepta is a Russian product with strong antiseptics, as a result of which its use is allowed only for 2 weeks in a row. The solution contains benzydamine, a substance that causes a feeling of numbness, so the mouthwash is recommended for the treatment of stomatitis, since mouth ulcers are very painful. 150 ml. the solution is sold at a price of 135 rubles.

  6. Colgate Plax (Colgate Plax). A Russian rinse with potassium salts in combination with citric acid, which reduces tooth sensitivity, sodium fluoride, which protects against caries, and cetylpyridinium chloride, used to reduce gum inflammation (if there are wounds or ulcers in the mouth, it is better to refrain from purchasing the product, since this component inhibits healing process). When used for more than 2 weeks in a row, irritation of the mucous membrane and allergies may occur.
  7. GLISTER Amway (Glister Amway). Not the best German product, containing only antiseptic and alcohol. It can be used exclusively for gum inflammation, and even then for no more than a couple of weeks. Despite all its disadvantages, the drug costs more than everyone else: 50 ml. will cost more than 400 rubles.

Features of the action of Listerine mouthwash

To ensure complete care, in addition to brushing and flossing, you should regularly use a special mouth rinse. Listerine is one of the most famous on the market, and we will talk about it in more detail.

So, why do you need mouthwash and Listerine in particular? This product helps not only prevent the development of harmful bacteria in the oral cavity, but also cleanse the mouth of permanent plaque. So, with poor care, the following can happen:

  • local inflammation;
  • development of caries and subsequent tooth destruction;
  • bad smell in mouth.

Listerine is good because, unlike other rinses that provide only the external part of oral care, it has more effective activity against bacteria and is able to remove almost entirely. This is evidenced by a number of relevant studies conducted by doctors over the hundred-year history of this brand.

The formula of the drug is constantly optimized and improved , which allows for better care of teeth and oral cavity. In particular, dental plaque is completely removed, which, if poorly cared for, can eventually turn into tartar and cause a lot of problems during treatment.

Moreover, such stone is a breeding ground for microbes, can injure the gums and contribute to diseases such as gingivitis or periodontitis. And all this is accompanied by extremely unpleasant breath.

With regular use of Listerine mouthwash, you will soon experience the following:

  • a thin layer of dental plaque, on which microbes can multiply, is removed;
  • the activity of enzymes secreted by microbes is significantly reduced;
  • the protective shell of microbes collapses, as a result of which they die;
  • the oral cavity gets rid of cell remnants of harmful microbes;
  • new bacteria do not appear for a certain time, their spread is controlled;
  • the unpleasant odor from the mouth disappears.

Mouthwashes prescribed for chronic gum inflammation

  1. MEXIDOL (Mexidol). A Russian product with an anti-inflammatory component called Mexidol and a complex of amino acids that moisturizes the mucous membrane and increases its immunity. The product can also be used as a preventative to reduce gum inflammation. It is prescribed to people wearing dentures and suffering from stomatitis.

  2. Forest balm. The composition contains many herbal components (St. John's wort, chamomile, celandine and many others), but in addition to them, the solution contains fragrances and various chemical compounds, including triclosan (an effective substance that reduces the inflammatory process much better than herbal remedies). But triclosan can only be used after deposits have been removed. The rinse aid is relatively inexpensive: 250 ml of solution costs about 100 rubles.

  3. SPLAT (Splat) “Complete” (Complete). A Russian inexpensive product (the price of 340 ml of solution is approximately 115 rubles) with a weak effect. It does not contain alcohol or fluorine compounds, but it does contain polydon, which helps dissolve plaque. The product is purely preventive: it will not cope with the removal of inflammation and strengthening of teeth. But it does not contain antibiotics, so it can be used for a long period of time.

Mouthwashes for hypersensitive teeth

  1. ELMEX “Sensitive Plus. One of the highest quality rinses for hypersensitive teeth, allowing you to solve the problem in the shortest possible time. In addition to amino fluoride, the solution contains a polymer that forms a protective film on the surface of the enamel.

  2. LACALUT (Lakalut) "Sensitive". German quality product with a good composition. Chlorhexidine and aluminum lacatate reduce bleeding gums, but a course of use lasting more than 3 weeks is not recommended.

Types of Listerine

As far as I understand from reviews on the Internet, at first Listerine was produced only in one form. It was a concentrated and very unpleasant-tasting, but effective drug.

All the reviews essentially said the same thing - it tastes terrible, but it helps. I didn’t really believe that Listerine would magically remove the problem with my gums, as they wrote in the reviews, but I hoped that it would become easier and went to the pharmacy.

It turned out that Listerine is now produced in a completely different way. Since 2014, there are 5 variants of Listerine on sale. And for gum health, and for whitening, and comprehensive care. Available in different flavors - green tea, mint.
