How Botox works
Botox injection is an effective technique for eliminating facial wrinkles and forming a beautiful facial contour. Essentially, this is a correction without a scalpel.
Botox is a weakened, purified neurotoxic drug based on botulinum toxin. The latter is produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. A powerful neuroparalytic that can relax facial muscles.
Botulinum toxin A has been used in cosmetology for more than 30 years. It is injected into the area of the facial muscle, as a result it relaxes, and the skin relief of the area is noticeably smoothed. The hydrobalance of the deep layers of the dermis is restored, the natural production of collagen and elastin is stimulated.
Botox is used to correct facial contours, smooth out wrinkles on the forehead, in the eye area and nasolabial triangle.
Indications and when to start doing mesotherapy
Due to the diversity of the composition of drugs, mesotherapy in cosmetology is used:
- to rejuvenate the skin and improve its quality;
- in the treatment of acne, correction of pigmentation, stabilization of the vascular wall;
- to combat alopecia;
- during lipomodelling, when you need to remove excess fat and shape the contours of the face and body;
- in the complex correction of stretch marks.
The dermatologist selects the dosage and drug or their combination, focusing on the problem. There are no ready-made solutions.
Starting from adulthood, if you have the above problems, you can start doing mesotherapy procedures.
Exposure time
The duration of the effect of Botox depends on the individual characteristics of the body, habits, and care procedures:
- Age. Typically, botulinum therapy is indicated for people over 45 years of age, but often younger people also need correction. The breakdown of drug substances in a young body occurs faster, so the duration of the effect is reduced.
- Behavior. Poor nutrition, lack of sleep, stress and negative habits affect not only your well-being, but also your appearance - they worsen the effect of injections.
- Quality of the drug. The drug must be original and stored correctly.
Signs of Botox working
It is easy to feel the effect of botulinum toxin after the procedure: the facial muscles at the injection site stop working almost immediately, although a trace of the wrinkle will still be visible. For example, it will not be possible to frown your forehead, and, therefore, folds on the skin will not be able to form.
On days 5-7, the distribution of the drug ends, the effect becomes maximum: the skin is noticeably fresher, acquires a healthy shine and tint, and cosmetics fit perfectly on it. Even deep wrinkles are gradually smoothed out.
When administered correctly, Botox injections do not turn the face into a “mask.” There will still be facial expressions and emotions. To get truly excellent results, contact beauty centers - cosmetologists with extensive experience work there.
Plasma therapy
Plasma therapy is positioned as a natural healing of the skin and more. Instead of drugs, the patient’s own plasma is used here, processed in a special way and enriched with platelet-derived growth factors. Plasma therapy is also called plasma lifting or PRP therapy - all these are synonyms.
How does it work
Plasma enriched with growth factors helps remove cell components destroyed by photoaging, activates fibroblasts that produce collagen, improves and renews skin tissue.
Multiple studies confirm the results: smooth texture and tone of the face, less noticeable wrinkles and stretch marks, a slight lifting effect.
When it helps
In aesthetic medicine, plasma therapy is recommended to be used:
- for aging skin, as plasma lifting improves relief and color, relieves swelling, reduces wrinkles;
- in the treatment of acne and post-acne, atopic dermatitis and eczema;
- when restoring skin after aggressive procedures.
Plasma therapy is often used in combination with other techniques, such as fillers, chemical peels or laser procedures. This is how PRP helps the skin recover faster after procedures.
How long does the effect last?
According to scientific research, the results of PRP therapy appear faster and last longer in younger patients - up to 35 years. For such people, it is enough to repeat the injections after 12–24 months.
Side effects
If the conditions for plasma therapy are strictly observed (taking blood on an empty stomach, no exacerbations of herpes infection for a month, etc.), there is usually no adverse reaction.
Repeated procedures
After Botox is removed, you can repeat the course to get the results back. Wait until your facial muscles have fully recovered to get the best results.
If Botox was administered for the first time, a corrective session is usually carried out after 8 months. All subsequent injections are performed at intervals of 4-6 months. With this technique you can maintain consistently good results.
If procedures are performed too often, the sensitivity of the dermis and nerve structures increases significantly. Botox dissolves faster each time, correction is required more often.
Stages of manipulation
To ensure consistency of action, perform the injection process step by step:
- Place the patient in a chair or couch.
- Treat your hands with antiseptic and wear sterile gloves.
- Determine the injection site for the drug.
- Be sure to check the integrity of the syringe packaging and its expiration date.
- Examine the drug in the same way.
- Treat the cut area of the ampoule with a disinfectant.
- Open the bottle of medicine.
- Remove the syringe from the package and attach the needle to it.
- Draw up the required amount of medicine and carefully release all the air.
- Place the syringe in a sterile container.
- Apply a tourniquet above the medication injection area. In this case, the pulse in the adjacent artery should be felt. It is important to apply the tourniquet over clothing or a special diaper.
- The patient places his hand on a pillow with his palm up (if the injection is given in the area of the elbow or forearm) or down (when the injection is injected into a vein on the back of the hand).
- Ask the patient to “work” with his fist to force blood into the vein. When the vessel is easily identified, the brush should be squeezed and not unclenched.
- Wipe the injection area with an alcohol wipe 2 times.
- Take a syringe with medicine, the cut of the needle is directed upward.
- Gently pull the skin near the injection site with your thumb.
- Insert the needle into the vein at an angle of approximately 15º, approximately 1/3 of the way. Perform the procedure slowly, as the needle should enter the vein and not pierce it.
- Pull the syringe plunger slightly (blood should enter it, which means the manipulations are correct).
- Remove the tourniquet to restore blood circulation (the patient must also unclench his fist), carefully and smoothly inject the medicine into the vein.
- Place an alcohol pad on the injection area and carefully remove the needle.
- Press the napkin firmly against the vein to stop bleeding and prevent the formation of a hematoma.
- After about 5 minutes, replace the napkin with sterile cotton wool, which should be secured with a bandage.
Precise adherence to the sequence of actions reduces the risk of complications by 90%. Please note that only a nurse can perform the procedure. DoctorMos advises not to experiment and not inject yourself.
Is it possible to extend the result?
Follow all the cosmetologist's recommendations to get the maximum, safe and prolonged effect of the procedure.
We will consider the main recommendations below:
- Physical activity in the first 7-10 days after the session significantly reduces the effect of botulinum therapy.
- There are no additional jokes between the main courses! They will provoke the production of antibodies, which destroy the toxin and reduce its effect to a minimum.
- Avoid solariums, baths and saunas.
- Assess the compatibility of current pharmacotherapy with contraindications to botulinum therapy.
Lifestyle after the procedure
The strictest recommendations for the first 3 days after the session:
- Avoid alcoholic drinks: ethyl alcohol increases blood flow to the face.
- Do not take hot baths or go to the sauna.
- Avoid visiting the beach and solarium.
- Protect your face from direct sunlight.
- Avoid even minimal physical activity.
- Do not take muscle relaxants, tetracycline antibiotics, or B vitamins.
- Do not massage the injection area.
How does Dysport work: what can and cannot be done before and after injections?

Injection cosmetology has pushed plastic surgery into the background. So, in order to prolong youth and allow the skin to remain just as fresh, healthy, without wrinkles, just a few beauty injections are enough, for example, Dysport injections.
This is a drug based on botulinum toxin. It is used to eliminate facial wrinkles, as well as for hyperhidrosis - increased sweating of the armpits, arms, and legs.
How does Dysport work?
The drug blocks the motor impulse from nerves to muscles. As a result, those muscles that contribute to the appearance of facial wrinkles are compressed. Don’t worry that after the injection your whole face will become motionless: the procedure involves local injection of Dysport, so everything will be fine with facial expressions.
- Where can you inject Dysport:
- around eyes;
- forehead;
- nose bridge area;
- armpits (with hyperhidrosis).
- What should you not do before the procedure?
- You should not take antibiotics 10 days before the procedure.
- For 2-3 days you need to bend over as little as possible. Any physical activity will lead to increased stimulation of blood flow to the face. And, if the day before you did sports or cleaning, and then went for Dysport, the drug may be distributed unevenly.
- For 2 nights it is better to sleep on a high pillow.
- For 3 days you should give up alcohol, coffee and smoking. They also affect blood microcirculation, so it’s better not to take risks. Otherwise, the drug, as with physical activity, may be distributed unevenly.
When does the effect of Dysport injections occur?
You will notice the first effect 2-5 days after the procedure. And the final one is only after 12-14 days.
Indications
Dysport injections can be given to those who:
- there are wrinkles and creases in the forehead;
- folds on the bridge of the nose and between the eyebrows;
- wrinkles in the corners of the eyes;
- facial wrinkles;
- any imperfections in the décolleté area;
- asymmetry of eyebrows and cheekbones is observed;
- hyperhidrosis.
Contraindications
They are divided into relative and absolute.
The first include:
- pregnancy and breastfeeding;
- chronic diseases in the acute stage;
- the affected area of the skin where the drug must be injected.
In the list of absolute contraindications:
- individual intolerance to the components of the drug;
- pathologies of the cardiovascular system;
- respiratory failure;
- autoimmune neuromuscular diseases;
- problems with swallowing function;
- diseases of the endocrine system.
How is the injection procedure performed?
Before starting the procedure, you should consult your doctor to find out if you have any health-related contraindications.
The whole procedure is divided into the following stages:
The cosmetologist marks places on the skin for further administration of Dysport. Disinfects the patient's skin.
The administration is carried out using a thin needle and only with a pre-calculated dosage.
IMPORTANT! How many dysport units are needed for different zones:
- horizontal forehead folds: 40-60 units;
- eyebrow fold: 40-80 units;
- "crow's feet": up to 40 units;
- lifting the corners of the mouth: up to 30 units;
- upper lip wrinkles: up to 20 units;
The procedure does not require anesthesia; specialists only use a cold compress.
At the end, this compress is removed, and the patient can go home.
1 session takes from 30 to 60 minutes. Repeated injections can be done no earlier than after 3-4 months.
How should you behave after the introduction of Dysport?
The doctor will announce all recommendations immediately after the procedure.
Here are some of them:
- It is important to be in an upright position for 3-4 hours.
- IT IS PROHIBITED to massage or touch the area where the drug was injected.
- The injection site can be cooled with ice for 15-20 minutes.
- Move the muscles in the area where the drug was injected immediately after the procedure for 30 minutes.
- Do not visit baths and saunas for 2 weeks.
- Can I drink alcohol after Dysport?
No, this is prohibited for 2 weeks. The fact is that any alcoholic drink “turns off” the effect of the drug, so if you perform the procedure and then decide to drink, you can assume that everything was in vain.
How is Dysport different from Botox?
Both drugs contain botulinum toxin; it turns out that Dysport and Botox are identical, but there are still differences.
The manufacturer of Botox is America, and Dysport is made in France.
Dysport has a smaller molecular weight than Botox.
Each drug contains a different concentration of botulinum toxin. For example, there is 2.5 times less of it in Dysport than in Botox. Again, Botox is more expensive than Dysport, but less of the former is needed to carry out a particular procedure.
When should you start getting beauty injections?
It all depends on age, and everyone has their own characteristics.
I would divide it into 3 categories:
- 20-25 years. At this age, the skin does not need injections, but only high-quality cleansing and moisturizing. There may be problems with acne, but in order to get rid of them, there are different solutions, but not injections.
- 25-30 years old. You can now begin to prevent aging, which is always associated with a lack of hyaluronic acid. With age, the skin becomes less elastic, the oval of the face may even “swim”, and the level of elasticity decreases. Therefore, injection cosmetology will come to the rescue.
- 35+ years. Skin tone decreases and the skin gradually loses elasticity. More and more wrinkles appear at the corners of the eyes. And you can fill them with Dysport or Botox.
- Is it possible to get beauty injections in the summer?
Many people think that it is not, but in fact it is possible. In the summer, injections with botulinum toxin help prevent squinting from the bright sun, which usually causes wrinkles to appear in different areas of the face.
By the way, if you get beauty injections at the beginning of summer, you can forget about excessive sweating throughout the hot season and feel comfortable.

Undesirable effects
It is impossible to predict in advance how the substance will be distributed, how muscle fibers will react to the effects of botulinum toxin.
Typical side effects are redness of the facial skin, the appearance of papules, pain, and swelling.
Rare complications and their causes:
- Strong relaxation of the frontal muscles gives the effect of lowered eyebrows.
- Excessive botulinum toxin injections can lead to eyelid spasm.
- Excessive physical activity and ignoring recommendations are a common cause of asymmetry, bruising, and articulation disorders.
- Individual reaction: headaches, lumps and papules at injection points, increased intraocular pressure.
