Ankylos – the golden mean in the line of dental implants

In this article we will talk about the Ankylos dental implant system, which enjoys the well-deserved respect of dentists.

Ankylos implants belong to the premium class, but they are more affordable than other premium systems, such as Nobel Biocare implants, which are also installed in our clinics.

It is no coincidence that we focused on cost. Implant prosthetics is an expensive method of tooth restoration and the question of price is always relevant. The main thing is that savings do not come at the expense of the quality of treatment.

Why do Ankylos implants cost less than their premium competitors?

The question of which dental implants are better and whether a high price is an indicator of quality is discussed not only by patients. Among implantologists and orthopedists, there is no consensus and this is completely normal (remember the arguments between car owners about car brands).

The main thing you need to know when discussing with your doctor which implant system to use prosthetics is that there are no bad implants from well-known manufacturers on the market. No doctor will work with an implantation system that has just appeared or has a dubious reputation in the dental community. Therefore, patients choose from implants already selected by experienced doctors.

In general, all implants are similar to each other. They are made of titanium, have a root shape, a rough surface, threads and several sizes for different clinical cases.

Most manufacturers agree that this is what the optimal dental implant design looks like today. But some manufacturers are introducing design features and nuances that increase the survival rate of implants and expand the possibilities of prosthetics in complex cases.

If a company not only sells implants, but also develops treatment protocols, conducts scientific research and trains doctors to work with its products, then on the one hand, such investments increase the cost of implants, and on the other hand, they provide more predictable results of prosthetics and long service life of orthopedic structures .

This is exactly how Dentsplay Sirona Implants works, producing the Ankylos implant system.

Features of Ankylos implants

A dental implant is a reliable method that allows you to restore the dentition and maintain the aesthetics of the oral cavity. During the preparation process, not only the best dentist performing the procedure is selected, but also the brand of artificial roots. A dental implant with German Ankylos implants guarantees the quality of the implant. Doctors advise patients to install an ankylosing implant because of its many benefits:

  • The quality of the product is at the highest level. During use, only a small percentage of patients complained of discomfort due to complications after the procedure. Other people did not have such effects. The model belongs to the premium class, doctors studied it, identifying differences, characteristics, and advantages.
  • The best composition. Contains a titanium base, it is a hypoallergenic and durable material. There are no auxiliary components that cause allergic reactions. Titanium in its pure form, without impurities.
  • Arc-shaped thread. The company has patented the method, so it is considered unique. Contact with bone increases, stability improves even with severe pathologies of bone tissue. With the help of an arch, installation is carried out using a minimally invasive method. The surgeon does not need to make unnecessary incisions for long-term rehabilitation after implantation.
  • Special coating. It has a porous structure created using Friadent Plus technology, the roughness is formed by sandblasting with the addition of acid. This stabilizes the device in the soft tissue. Cells (osteoblasts) and fibrin threads penetrate inside. The implant is firmly fixed and fuses with the bone base. The device becomes one with the jaw.
  • Root bone. This is a TissueCare technology based facility. The gingival contour is formed. Over the years, it has not been subject to destruction or damage due to the deep immersion of the implant, the presence of a rough neck, or the contact connection between the artificial root and the abutment.
  • Survivability. Clinical trials have been conducted for many years. It has been proven that during 10-15 years of operation the device is securely fixed, and survival rate is at the highest level.
  • Sterility. Each model is sterilely packaged. There are no bacteria, viruses, fungi or other pathogenic microorganisms on the implant. The content of foreign chemicals and dirt is excluded. This allows every patient and doctor to be calm about the safety of internal tissues. There is no risk of infection.

When a dental practice orders implants, they come with the tools needed to install them. In addition, it is proposed to use new techniques that preserve the patient’s tissue, eliminate the risk of infection and shorten the rehabilitation period.

Ankylos – a company with history

There are now about 2,000 companies in the world that produce dental implants.

Most of them are, in fact, trading companies that do not engage in scientific development, but buy patents for the right to production and place orders at partner factories.

In total, about 200 companies, in addition to the production and sale of implants, are engaged in scientific research, innovation and analysis of long-term results of patient treatment.

This is a lot of work and a lot of investment, but thanks to this, every laudatory epithet about Dentsplay products can be confirmed by numbers.

“The Ankylos implant system has been used in clinical practice for over 25 years. Long-term clinical documentation is one of the most important tools indicating that the Ankylos implant system is effective, reliable and safe.”

More information about the history of innovations in Ankylos orthopedic products and studies analyzing the long-term results of implant prosthetics can be found in the company’s booklet.

Currently, Dentsplay Sirona Implants is part of the international holding Dentsplay, which dates back to 1899 and produces dental equipment and consumables. The products are used by dentists in 120 countries and their quality is beyond doubt.

In 2022, the Ankylos implant system turns 30 years old.

Listen to what doctors have to say about the possibilities of the Ankylos system.

The history of Ankylos and the life of the company today

The first German Ankylos implants were released in Germany more than 30 years ago (in 1985). Over the next two years, Ankyloz implant products received high marks from practicing dentists, and, accordingly, began to be widely used. Currently, Ankylosis dental implants are produced under the auspices of the largest dental concern Dentsply Sirona Global in the Implants division. Interestingly, this concern also owns popular brands of dental implants called Astra Tech and XiVE Friadent.

Good to know! Based on the results of scientific and clinical observations, in which more than 4,000 patients took part, and more than 12.5 thousand implants were examined, over the years of service the systems have proven themselves to be reliable, resistant to the most intense loads. The survival rate after 17 years of wearing reaches 93.3%. In fact, this is a very high value, indicating the quality and long-term stability of Ankylos products.

Question for a specialist
The decision to undergo implantation comes to most patients after carefully studying the advantages of this modern method of dental restoration. But very often a situation arises when a person does not know the important characteristics of the types of implants that are installed in the clinic. To be prepared in such an important issue, we suggest considering the key features of the Ankylos brand, whose implants are distinguished by the highest quality, reliability, and aesthetic appeal. And also the German implants Ankylos (“Ankylosis”) meet all the demands of modern dental science.

Features of Ankylos implants

1) Lifetime warranty on implants.

2) Each implant has a serial number and double sterile packaging.

3) In 1987, the company patented a specific form of implant thread, which ensures its stability on the day of surgery and allows immediate installation of a temporary crown, and also began producing conical abutments that create a tight connection between the implant and the crown and distribute the load evenly. Thanks to these innovations, orthopedic structures have become more reliable.

4) Ankylos produces a line of implants of different diameters and lengths, and since 2013, also short implants, which in some cases make it possible to avoid bone grafting.

5) The universal connection of the implant allows the use of different abutments, which expands the possibilities of using the system in more complex cases.

6) In addition to standard titanium abutments, Ankylos offers zirconium dioxide abutments for prosthetics in aesthetically significant areas. This makes it possible to eliminate aesthetic defects of restorations in the case of bone tissue atrophy, in which part of the abutment is exposed.

7) In 2005, Ankylos introduced the unique concept of TissuCare, which translates as “tissue care”. In accordance with it, the diameter of the abutment is smaller than the diameter of the implant and they are connected below the bone level, forming a place for the formation of hard tissues and forming a beautiful gingival margin.

The specific shape of the connection between the implant and abutment is clearly visible in the image.

In the same year, the rough surface of Friadent Plus was patented, the structure of which accelerates the integration of the implant into the bone tissue.

Design Features

A significant team of experts works on the construction and design of Ankylos. The system is made of a special titanium alloy. It has a special patented thread. This design is optimal to evenly distribute the load on the bone tissue.

Friadent Plus biocompatible coating is the company's main development. It helps the implant to take root due to the fact that it has certain micro-roughness and is applied at a special temperature.

TissueCare Connection technology was invented to reliably connect the parts of the system. In its center there is an area for attaching the abutment and implant. This solution helps to increase the volume of soft tissues that are adjacent to the structure and protects them from mechanical damage and pathogenic microorganisms.

Ankylos Simplant – computer-aided treatment planning

Dentistry is increasingly using computer technology, which allows the doctor to carefully plan treatment and the patient to see the expected result in advance.

In 2009, Dentsply developed Simplant software for surgical planning and simulation of navigation templates that quickly and non-traumatically place implants in the planned position.

To summarize: Ankylos is a reliable and clinically proven implant system that provides excellent prosthetic results with minimal risks of complications and costs less than competitors from the premium segment.

Known analogues on the market

German Ankylos implants are expensive. Their analogues include the following models:

  • Xive
  • Osstem
  • Nobel biocare

The Xive system does not require additional grinding and recreates the natural appearance of teeth. The adaptation period passes quickly, and soon the feeling of an extra object in the mouth disappears. The ultra-thin Friadent plus series is used for instant positioning in tight spaces between teeth. The classic type is installed in several stages.

Osstem are dental implants that are more biocompatible with autologous bone. A wide variety of model configurations and sizes can solve most dental problems. They have been produced in South Korea since 2005. The dental structure is very popular among dentists all over the world and is of high quality.

The Nobel biocare implant does not require additional bone augmentation, as only a minimal volume is required. The design of the model is so well thought out that it can be installed on the lower jaw without serious injury or labor costs. The top has a triangle shape, which contributes to excellent fixation of the implant. The crown is usually installed on the day of implantation. The surface of the implant is a natural imitation of bone tissue. Thanks to this, docking takes place without complications and quite quickly.

Each model has its own identification number in the catalog, so the products cannot be counterfeited. When planning surgical interventions, special 3D technologies are used to help achieve excellent results.

What is important for long life of implants

The success of implantation and the service life of the orthopedic structure depend on the professionalism of doctors, the chosen implantation system, the general health of the patient, compliance with all recommendations for the use of the orthopedic structure and proper daily care, which we will talk about at the end of the article.

In order for orthopedic structures to serve for a long time, they must be carefully taken care of. See how to care for different types of implant-supported dentures.

Features and advantages of Ankylos designs

Ankylos dental implants belong to the premium segment, with all the attendant features. What does it mean? Ankylosis implantation systems have a number of key advantages that make their installation reliable and comfortable. Let's find out what are the success factors of Ankylos implants.

Pure titanium included

Implant products of this brand are created from pure medical titanium, without any inclusions. The advantage of titanium is that it is a completely biocompatible material with the human body. The absence of other metals - vanadium or aluminum - makes the healing of the structure (osseointegration) better and faster, which is confirmed by relevant international certificates.

Unique carving and root-like shape

Although the Ankylosis system implants are not self-tapping, their progressive patented arc-shaped thread is made taking into account all modern requirements. Due to the frequent thread pitch, the total area of the implanted structure increases, i.e. A larger volume of bone will grow onto the implant. Installation occurs in a minimally invasive manner, and the thread provides high primary stability even with insufficient bone tissue, which is an advantage for implantation with immediate loading. The stability of the implant and the correct transfer of chewing load to the jaw bone are possible thanks to its root-like (or conical) shape, identical to the roots of natural teeth.

Classic surface FRIADENT Plus

Most modern dental implants have a rough, porous surface to increase the area of bone fusion. Ankylos was no exception. During the manufacturing process, the implant is subjected to sandblasting and high-temperature treatment. This is how microscopic pores are formed on the surface, to which, immediately after implantation into the bone, fibrin threads are attached and osteoblasts (young bone building cells) migrate. The volumetric microporous surface promotes high-quality “growth” of bone tissue onto the outer layer of the titanium structure.

But in fact, there is nothing unusual or innovative about the surface of Ankylos implants: it is a classic porous coating that does not lead to active cell growth, i.e. there is no additional stimulation, such as with Nobel or Straumann implants. Therefore, the healing time for these models is quite long (at least 3-4 months in the lower jaw), while implants with an active surface can be loaded within a couple of months after fixation.

TissueCare System

TissueCare is the company's concept of "tissue care." To be more precise, TissueCare[1] ensures the formation of an aesthetic gingival contour, as well as the preservation of the marginal bone for a long period of wearing Ankylosis systems. The concept includes several fundamental design features:

  • installation of the implant below bone level: on average 2 mm,
  • unique conical connection with the abutment: placed in the center of the implant (horizontal displacement), blocks spontaneous rotation of the abutment around its axis. The TissueCare geometry is the basis for the formation of voluminous and stable soft tissue (gingiva). The advantage of the connection is also manifested in the absence of microscopic gaps, cracks, displacements of structural components, bone resorption and loosening of the artificial root,
  • Rough shoulder design: The very first Ankylos implants came with a polished neck. But now the company has moved to microporous surfaces in this area. In the case when implants are placed deep into the bone, this is an additional plus in terms of survival rate, because the neck is also densely overgrown with bone tissue cells. But on the other hand, this imposes some restrictions on the use of these models in certain clinical situations (for example, when there is little bone, it is better to place an implant with a polished neck, that is, closer to the gum - this way, when the marginal bone subsides, bacteria will not accumulate on the implant).

An abutment (or suprastructure) is a kind of “adapter” of an implant structure, which on one side is connected to an artificial root, and the opposite side is in contact with the gum and rises above it (a prosthesis - a crown or bridge) will be attached to this part. The high-quality connection of the abutment and the features of its surface are very important for comfortable, aesthetic and long-term wearing of the prosthesis on the implant. All Ankylos implants are two-part (the implant itself plus an abutment; there are no monolithic structures). And at the junction, only a minimal gap is maintained, reliable fastening without fractures, and high-quality load transfer occurs.

Innovative installation technologies

Using the latest technology, when installing an implant, the bone is treated in a gentle manner so that minimal trauma becomes the key to rapid tissue regeneration and excellent survival of the artificial root. This technique has become available to implantologists thanks to a specially developed set of instruments. In addition, during the surgical stage, a special instrument cooling technology is used, which protects tissues from damage and necrosis and speeds up their recovery.

Sterility of production and storage

The manufacturer packages products in multifunctional double glass flasks. This ensures reliable transportation and storage of sterile implants, as well as their convenient, quick and sterile removal before installation.

Implantation stages

The Ankylos implant is performed using a unique technique. This allows the introduction of artificial roots in cases of insufficient bone tissue or the presence of certain problems for which the use of other systems is contraindicated. Main installation steps:

  • preparation, implementation of diagnostic measures;
  • screwing in implants;
  • fixation of prostheses.

Before installing the Ankylos system, a preparatory stage is required. These are the following activities:

  • the dentist makes a visual assessment, determines the condition of the oral cavity, contraindications and indications for installation;
  • treatment of caries (if any), inflammatory processes;
  • cleaning dental pockets from accumulations of tartar and plaque;
  • elimination of associated contraindications.

Next, the doctor will perform anesthesia at the surgical site (local anesthesia is used). The dosage is calculated individually and depends on various factors. After the drug has taken effect, the implantation procedure is carried out. To do this, an incision is made in the gum and a hole is made in the bone. After antiseptic treatment, the rod is screwed on and the correct position is checked. In some cases, mandatory bone grafting is required, for example, a sinus lift is indicated for the top row. In this case, the implants are installed only four to six months after the operation.

After installing the artificial root, the site is closed with a special plug, and the wound is sutured. Osseointegration takes from two to three months, in complex cases it can last up to six months. A month after the procedure, the cap is removed and the stump is installed.

For prosthetics, crowns made of different materials can be used. These are metal ceramics, dental porcelain on a metal base or zirconium. The shade is matched to the color of natural enamel, restoring aesthetics.

Stages of treatment

Treatment includes several main sequential stages:

Preparatory stage

  1. A conversation where the doctor will carefully listen to your expectations and clarify your preferences
  2. Collecting anamnesis, identifying limitations and contraindications.
  3. Diagnosis of the condition of the oral cavity (visual examination, functional studies, x-rays).
  4. Discussion of possible solutions to your problem. The specialist will definitely tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of each of the proposed methods. He will suggest alternative methods, make a preliminary calculation of costs and indicate the approximate time frame for treatment.
  5. Drawing up a treatment plan. It is carried out only after agreement with the patient on the general intervention scheme. Depending on the individual clinical picture, at this stage it is possible to involve related specialists (therapist, periodontist, hygienist, surgeon, implantologist, orthodontist) in the discussion. As a result, the patient receives a clear idea of subsequent manipulations, their feasibility and timing. At this stage, the cost of each procedure and the calculation of the price for ankylos dental implantation are discussed in detail.
  6. Preparation of the oral cavity (removal of bacterial deposits and hard plaque, prevention of gums, treatment of caries and its complications). In some situations, it may be recommended to replace existing fillings, artificial crowns, or even braces correction (if, as a result of a long absence of a tooth, neighboring units have been displaced).

Surgical stage

Some types of operations (for example, tooth extraction) are included in the period of preparatory manipulations with subsequent healing or are carried out as part of implant placement according to a one-step protocol. The stage involves any surgical interventions:

  • removal of a tooth,
  • bone grafting,
  • implantation.

The versatility of the Ankylos system allows you to combine these stages and shift them in time, reducing the total time of surgical treatment (from the beginning of procedures to the prosthetic stage) without loss of quality. With many other systems, this approach is not possible and more than six months pass from tooth extraction to crown installation.

Postoperative period

During the period of osseointegration (the time of implant healing), you will not be left with an unaesthetic defect in the dentition. According to indications or at your request, we are ready to manufacture and install a temporary prosthesis that will serve you until the installation of a permanent structure (3-6 months).

Prosthetics

Permanent orthopedic construction is the final stage of dental intervention. Ankylosis implants maximize the range of prosthetics. Any type of system can be installed on them:

  • Crowns,
  • Bridges,
  • Conditionally removable structures,
  • Removable dentures of bridge and overlapping type with fixation on beams, telescopic crowns or ball-shaped abutments.

The implanted artificial root comes with a lifetime warranty. Supragingival parts (abutments and crowns) can be easily replaced if necessary. Depending on the materials from which they are made, the service life ranges from 10 years and above. Replacement is most often recommended for aesthetic reasons or in case of loss of other teeth, in cases where the installed unit is included in the overall prosthetic design. Prosthetics or replacement of elements of the Ankylosis system should be performed by a specialist who knows all the nuances of working with the Tissue Care concept. The Ankylos implant system allows you to obtain the best aesthetic and functional orthopedic result in each individual case.

Abutments and prosthetic solutions – many prosthetic options

An abutment (or suprastructure) is a kind of “adapter” of the implant structure, which on one side is connected to the implant, and the opposite side is in contact with the gum and rises above it (a prosthesis - a crown or bridge) will be attached to this part.

To create specific abutments and orthopedic structures (crowns, bridges, beams), a development from Ankylos called Atlantis is used. Using CAD/CAM systems - virtual modeling and artistic milling equipment, structures are made from zirconium dioxide, cobalt-chrome alloys, titanium and gold-plated titanium.

Dental implants "Ankylosis" are considered quite universal. The same can be said about abutments of this brand, which can fit any original implant. Abutments are made straight and angled (0°, 5° and 15°), they can be used for screw or cement fixation, which gives the doctor a convenient base for each specific case of dental restoration. Let's look further at the ABA model range.

All aba have markings indicating the type of fixation with the implant - “C” for a conical connection (installed in a free position, as required by the clinical situation), “X” for a hexagonal connection (fixed in one of six options), “C/X "(can be fixed either freely or in 1 of 6 positions).

Solutions for single restorations

  • Standard C: developed according to the principle of “crown and bridge at abutment level”. They are used to create an even contour of the gums and prevent peri-implantitis,
  • TitaniumBase Agricultural: The base is made of durable titanium and the core is made of ceramic. Used for restorations in the aesthetic zone, because ceramics do not show through the crown,
  • ScanBase C: plastic scanning abutment, usable with all known scanners,
  • Regular C/X: have an integrated screw for fixing the prosthesis. The screw is movable, but not removable,
  • Balance Posterior: suitable for installation in the lateral areas of the dentition, where there are strong chewing loads,
  • Balance Anterior: a temporary abutment that promotes the formation of gum tissue and its smooth contour. Helps maintain the aesthetics of the temporary prosthesis in the smile area,
  • Cercon Balance C: made of ceramic and zirconium dioxide, suitable for the restoration of 1 anterior tooth,
  • Acuris: durable superstructure made of titanium, aluminum and vanadium.

Solutions for multiple missing teeth

A complete removable denture – new or previously worn by the patient – can be secured to implants using the following solutions:

  • SynCone C: specially designed composite abutments for implantation of a completely edentulous lower jaw using 4 Ankylosis implants, most often using a turnkey system. Moreover, prosthetics take place immediately - a telescopic version of fixing the prosthesis is used. In classical implantation with delayed prosthetics, it can be used on both jaws,
  • Balance Base C/narrow: used with the SmartFix concept from Dentsply Sirona. Suitable for quick and easy CAD/CAM prosthetics. Also used in narrow orthopedic spaces. Only suitable for screw fastening of prosthesis,
  • Snap Attachment C: abutments with a ball-shaped tip are used in patients with complete edentulous prosthetics of the lower jaw, have a conical connection,
  • Locator Abutments: Self-aligning tapered abutments for quick, easy one-click prosthetic placement. They are used even in conditions of limited height space; they compensate for axial deviations due to flexible retention.

“Mom had implantation in Moscow a year ago. She had been wearing a prosthesis on her lower jaw for a long time; she was very tired of constantly gluing and adjusting it. And then the doctors suggested an interesting option - to install Ankylosis implants and attach your old prosthesis to them. I looked for reviews from other patients, it seemed like many people had used this system, and no one complained. So my mother managed to save a lot on the operation. But the doctor immediately warned that in a couple of years it will be necessary to make a new prosthesis when the old one is demolished.”

Analogues and alternatives

Since Ankylosis belongs to the premium segment, designs from a similar category would be adequate alternatives. These are the brands Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Astra Tech - they are made not only from pure titanium, but are more studied (about 40 years of observation), their surfaces are chemically active and promote rapid engraftment in 4-8 weeks. They are widespread throughout the world and in dentistry in our country, so there are no problems when replacing components.

Advantages of installing dental implants with us

The ideal option is if the initial examination, consultation, and drawing up of a treatment plan is carried out by the dentist responsible for the final stage - an orthopedic doctor. It is this specialist who predicts and is responsible for the final result (installation of crowns, bridges, and other aesthetic restorations). During the planning process, specialized specialists may be involved to clarify the duration, nature and cost of the next stage.

At the Dental Beauty clinic, the initial appointment, consultation and preparation of a treatment plan is carried out by the center’s chief physician, Rafael Imashulevich Irzaev, an orthopedic dentist with more than 30 years of experience. We offer:

  • Save time. Professional comprehensive examination, diagnosis and competent detailed treatment plan - all in one place.
  • Price transparency. Already at the planning stage you will know the final amount of upcoming expenses.
  • Coordinated approach. The Dental Beauty center employs a well-coordinated team of specialists, each of whom takes an extremely responsible approach to their work and is ready to provide advisory and medical assistance at any stage of treatment from a specialist in a related field. The result of this approach is the coordinated actions of all doctors involved in the process and concentration on completing the task at hand.
